Moscow on the Hudson (1984)

A Russian circus visits the US. A clown wants to defect, but doesn't have the nerve. His saxophone playing friend however comes to the decision to defect in the middle of Bloomingdales. He is befriended by the black security guard and falls in love with the Italian immigrant from behind the perfume counter. We follow his life as he works his way through the American dream and tries to find work as a musician.

I think Williams is very good in this one. It's not one of his best but it is funny.

"Moscow on the Hudson" lets a potentially wonderful comic hero--and a great deal of thematic suggestiveness--slip away while ostensibly following his process of self-discovery and self-realization in the Land of the Free.

A film that is both poignantly dramatic and humourous in typical Robin Williams fashion. Although the political situation in the film is dated for today's audiences, it nonetheless delivers a message of hope for anyone carrying a torch for the American Dream.
