Allegro non troppo (1976)

An enterprising producer believes he has hit upon a winning concept: a program of original animated shorts set to classical music. Undeterred by warnings that this has already been done by an American named 'Prisney,' he rallies an orchestra of geriatric women, a bullish conductor, and an animator that he keeps locked in the dungeon. What could go wrong?

you will laugh, you will cry, and you will cry with laughter. bring kleenex and an adult diaper unless you plan to watch it in the bathroom. fantasia for adults, thoughtful with wonderful and raw animation.

An Italian version of "Fantasia" for adults. Brilliant and sometimes very touching and sad. The episode with a lonely, abandoned cat was the only piece of animation that I can recall which made me to shed tears; same effect with many other people around me in the movie theater. A real masterpiece!

"Allegro non troppo" "Happy but not a lot"

A series of cartoons animated to classical music pieces. It never reaches the grandiose heights of FANTASIA (the filmmakers are well aware of that fact), but the scribblings here are at the same time more adult (there's a good deal of cartoon nudity) and overall more whimsical than Disney's sometimes self-important commissions.

This movie was my introduction to Ravel's "Bolero".
