Mary Shelley never soars the way the film so clearly wants to, though. It's hard to invest in the movie's core relationship when it becomes clear just what an uncompromising and unsympathetic figure Percy Shelley is.

The pace is a little sluggish in places but the interaction between key characters is the film's strongest element.

If we spent a little less time on Mary and Percy, and a bit more watching Mary actually create, the result may have been different. Sadly, Mary Shelley is just not alive.
