Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's screenplay is less a response to its source than a careful college outline of it.

Intriguing emphasis on the relationship between Olive and Verena, but only James enthusiasts could enjoy it, and even they may be put off by the allusions to lesbianism.

A little dry, but has the stately visuals that are typical for Merchant-Ivory. The strange hints of suppressed lesbianism are an interesting touch.
