What starts out as a promising study of a complex character unfortunately slowly morphs into a moving, though nonetheless surprisingly conventional, occasionally ambiguous, tearjerker. Despite excellent performances by Christopher Abbott and, especially, Cynthia Nixon, the film has little to offer in the way of originality or insight. Regrettably, this is likely to leave a lot of viewers either disappointed or wondering exactly what the director was trying to say.

Despite the cerebral formalism that pushes it forward, Mond has made a genuine tearjerker.

A poignant drama that will leave you yearning for the kind of transformation that takes place near the end.

"James White" is the feature film directorial debut for Josh Mond, and he draws from his own experiences dealing with his mother's death from cancer. It has it's moments, but overall I felt the film didn't grab me. There are some good performances (in particular Cynthia Nixon), but the sad rich white kid movie has sort of worn out it's welcome. This guy is going through some heavy stuff, but the film runs into some predictable territory.

Both Nixon and Mond invest James White... with a raw honesty that makes James White a compelling drama about the demands and rewards of family.
