Thoroughly enjoyed thisagain and could well be my second favourite Scorsese film. Hilarious, unnerving and intense throughout, brilliant.

Ahead of its time! Criminally underrated!

Unlike anything else I've seen - this is the best thing Scorsese has ever done. Darkly and disturbingly humorous. With Travis Bickle it was possible to identify on some level with the frustrations that fed his violent actions. But there is no room here to identify with Pupkin. He's ultimately no more than an image, just like the fictional TV persona created by Jerry Lewis that he so aspires to be. This film's portrayal of one man's lonely obsession with the false promise of celebrity is prescient of the kind of unrealistic and futile ambitions that shape so many wannabes today.

You know what? In many ways this movie is superior to Taxi Driver and at the same time accompanies it gracefully. This is a radical post-modernist treat about the nature of the artist and the sacrifices that must be made. That and it's absolutely hilarious! The style and direction are way ahead of their time! I'm telling you this takes more than one screening because it fuses dreams and reality so well. Classic cinema! Classic De Niro! Very modern Scorsese!

Just ts the note for my dry sense of humour and reinforces my love for Robert and Scorsese. The main female in the film is HILARIOUS!
