Burning (2018)

Deliveryman Jong-su is out on a job when he runs into Hae-mi, a girl who once lived in his neighborhood. She asks if he'd mind looking after her cat while she's away on a trip to Africa. On her return, she introduces to Jong-su an enigmatic young man named Ben, who she met during her trip. One day Ben tells Jong-su about his most unusual hobby.

Burning is a character study that morphs, with masterly patience, subtlety and nary a single wasted minute, into a teasing mystery and eventually a full-blown thriller.

An intriguing and often-quirky Korean mystery that gets many things right but misses the mark on some others. The title aptly reflects the many diverse story elements going on here, with performances and plot threads that generally sizzle with an ever-growing intensity. However, there come times when the simmering goes on a little too long and where the cryptic dialogue is a little prolonged and needlessly vague. Consequently, the ultimate payoff is a little underwhelming and less than satisfying compared to the build-up it's given. In all, "Burning" comes ever so close to brilliance but just doesn't have quite enough in the tank to push it over the top.

Lee plays the actors off one another to create a compelling exploration of human nature. South Korea’s official Oscar submission, Burning culminates in a finale so astonishing that it will sear itself into viewers’ memories for years to come.

I liked it, and had me thinking about it for a long time after finishing it, which is always a great sign. Nevertheless, there are still many blank spaces that I need to fill in order to achieve a bigger understanding of the film.

Simmering with ambiguity, Burning plays its staging, writing, dialogue, acting, music, everything with carefully calibrated minimalism, but in turn it makes some grandiose statements. An unrecognizable murder-mystery Burning torches genre clichés and leaves a lasting, scorching blister.
