Billy Pilgrim, a veteran of the Second World War, finds himself mysteriously detached from time, so that he is able to travel, without being able to help it, from the days of his childhood to those of his peculiar life on a distant planet called Tralfamadore, passing through his bitter experience as a prisoner of war in the German city of Dresden, over which looms the inevitable shadow of an unspeakable tragedy.

An exceptional adaptation of what is probably one of the best American novels written in the past century. My only complaint is the character of Kilgore Trout is omitted from the narrative and Elliot Rosewater's character is neglected and lightly touched upon. Still, George Roy Hill makes a great film that conveys the same dark yet humorous Vonnegut philosophy. If Vonnegut was happy with the film (and he was), then I'm happy with it.

As strong an adaptation as humanly possible, trading Vonnegut's satirical personal essay approach for a more literal-yet-absurd whimsical approach to Billy Pilgrim's time-skipping. George Roy Hill's visual direction is uncharacteristically visual, finding the subtlest shifts in framing to shuttle Pilgrim from one year of life to another. Some power is lost in translation but all things considered, we have little reason to believe that such a great book could translate so successfully.

One of the most soul changing movies I've ever seen. Highly recommend it for all those who explore their own spiritual nature. What else to say but ....WOW!!!

Very fascinating film. From what I know and have read of Vonnegut, his work is not easily adapted. And although i haven't read Slaughterhouse-Five, this seems to do justice to the maniacal structure and scathing dark comedy that is characterstic of the author. Billy Pilgrim is a deep and fascinating character, and well acted by Michael Sacks. The action of the story happens AROUND him without any influence or effort BY him, such being the position of a writer adapting his life experiences. The three stories, separated by time (WWII) and space (planet Tralfamadore), are paralleled with exceptional editing in the style of Easy Rider and other arthouse films of the era. The story is a deep and complicated insight into the unhindered landscape of a writer's imagination. It blends science fiction with history and imagination with reality. It does, however, get a bit boring at times. Some of the content is significanly less impactful and almost serves as fillers for the mind-bending stuff.

Our lives are a series of moments. Billy Pilgrim lives his moments at random, but gains solace from the knowledge that death and birth are just the frames, the edges of life; and that nothing could be so irrelevant to the reality of a life as death, which by definition is not part of that life. Vonnegut seems both Nihilistic and deeply humanist. One of the great masters of black humour, he is deeply (and hilariously) cynical; but at the same time seriously angry about war and cruelty, and yet still at the same time seems to believe in our ability to transcend all horrors, to make the best of the few moments we all have here together.
