It's Chan's version of Charlie Parker, and she was with him near the end, so we don't see his more successful years. This makes the movie pretty dark throughout. It's very intense and the music is great.

Before Clint as director really blew me away with "A Perfect World", I stumbled across this gem on cable in the late 80's. I knew very little about Charlie Parker but was sucked into this lengthy film almost immediately. I think this film marks when Eastwood really started to hit his stride as a director. There were misses after this, sure, but I think this was a breakthrough and clearly a labor of love.
