For all the liberties the film takes with the facts of Holiday's life, the bottomless hurt in Ross' voice as she channels Holiday's tartly tragic spirit rings true.

Before Clint as director really blew me away with "A Perfect World", I stumbled across this gem on cable in the late 80's. I knew very little about Charlie Parker but was sucked into this lengthy film almost immediately. I think this film marks when Eastwood really started to hit his stride as a director. There were misses after this, sure, but I think this was a breakthrough and clearly a labor of love.
