A bad Polish actor is just trying to make a living when Poland is invaded by the Germans in World War II. His wife has the habit of entertaining young Polish officers while he's on stage, which is also a source of depression to him. When one of her officers comes back on a Secret Mission, the actor takes charge and comes up with a plan for them to escape.

Oh, I just happened by this film channel checking and what a gem! Intrigue, comedy and a most interesting plot! If this style appeals to you at all, you will thoroughly enjoy this film!

A pitch perfect political satire made in one of the scariest times in modern times and does an insanely great job of turning a setting of mass tragedy into really smart great humor. Very subversive to treat the Nazis in this way when at the time the world was terrified of them and a lot of great comedic chemistry and running jokes as well. Superb!

Lubitch was an outstanding director. The comedy in this my favorite film of his is pure art.

Superby Lubitsch comedy bravely playing fast-and-loose with Hitler barely a year after Pear Harbour. A stunning achievement in which the laughs keep coming despite - or because of - how serious the jeopardy seems to be.

[FR] Au cinéma c'est toujours mieux qu'à la télé, mais ce film était spécialement bien au cinéma : la salle bondée a applaudi à la fin de la séance, c'était la première fois que ça m'arrivait depuis le Burkina? Evidemment un excellent film, magistralement interprêté et mis en scène ; un chef d'oeuvre.
