Summertime on the coast of Maine, "In the Bedroom" centers on the inner dynamics of a family in transition. Matt Fowler is a doctor practicing in his native Maine and is married to New York born Ruth Fowler, a music teacher. His son is involved in a love affair with a local single mother. A nearly perfect film. It's expertly crafted and performed with an amazing performance by Spacek. It's a beautiful and wrenching portrait of what grief can do to good people.

My first response was "Why bother?" this story has been done to death on TV, film and novel -- so why add more? Looking past the fairly predictable arc of the film, there are some moments of visual poetry and subtle performance. Unfortunately, the script plods and so does the pacing. Sadly, another entry in the "Afterschool special" style of filmmaking.

This is a great example where a film asks you, what would you do in this situation? Wonderful acting, and brilliant direction make this a must see. Another film to toy with your emotions.
