This is more funny than psychological thriller. Polansky is a master on human alienation.

Roman Polanski's bizarre black comedy "Cul-de-Sac" successfully explores themes of isolation, sexual frustration, and mental and physical humiliation. The overly abrasive and visceral style is initially distancing, but the film slowly creeps beneath the skin and stays there. The only consistent distraction is Lionel Stander's grating voice.

Director: Roman Polanski Staring: Donald Pleasence, Francoise Dorleac, Lionel Stander 4 stars out of 4 Polanski has been one of my favorite directors for quite a while now, and this film does not challenge that. Simply put, it is absolutely hilarious! This dark comedy showcases many of Polanski's signiture traits while drawing the viewer into a bizarre plot with even wackier characters. The second half of thie film is certainly something to look forward to... the only thing that was missing was someone falling/jumping/being thrown out of a window...

The plot is dramatic with some brilliant drafts of comic paradoxes, when you don't expect them, in the middle of this static place, where the world seems only a picture and where the sea-tide seems so related to the charachter's mood, even in a dicey way. The line between a bad guy and a good guy is so lean. It doesn't matter if you close yourself in a lonely and isolated place to preserve your perfect dreamt world, or to "save" yourself from social limits. Human limits are inside yourself. By the way, what I loved the most in this movie are: the photography, the editing, the light. It's pure image poetry. P.S.: the woman looks so sadly cinic here, but maybe she's the only one that reads the events in a realistic way and doesn't loose her compass.

Good storyline, great characters, excellent Polanski!
