Polanski uses all kinds of off-kilter angles an close-ups and his actors are absolutely fearless. The pacing is a little off, as there are stretches where it gets a little long, but it upends convention at every turn and that s pretty thrilling.

Love a good PoMo art movie? Well, this early film by Roman Polanski may be right up your alley. Much of the film seems like improv between the three main characters, each of whom is fascinatingly bizarre. The plot keeps changing just enough that you feel like you don't quite know what's going on, but you'd like to. The basic plot seems to be that a tough guy gets stranded out on an island and slowly begins to take over the castle where a looney husband and his beautiful wife live. Interesting fact: actress Francoise Dorleac is the sister of Catherine Deneuve. No wonder she's so pretty.

Sexual identity and alienation in the face of bourgeoisie lifestyles seems to be a trend with Polanski at the beginning of his career. The film plays like a work of Beckett, with the added benefit of Polanski's ever-present and intrusive style that toys with emotions of the audience, without spilling into melodrama. Nobody makes a psychological thriller like this man.

A highly original and very amusing little gem from Polanski. You can clearly get his sense of humor by watching his earlier efforts.
