After seeing this, I don't think any other movie qualifies as a "character study".

My favourite Nicholas Ray film. It's a dark story of a man's stubborn-ness and vanquished love as Bogart tries to beat a murder rap whilst falling in love with Gloria Grahame. A wonderful film.

A movie about Hollywood from Hollywood which is against everything Hollywood stands for. Complex characters, twisted relationships, no happy resolutions. Bogart's performance, his best, is the epitome of world weary cynicism, self-hatred, neediness and resignation. A great, great movie.
