I only give 5 stars to a movie extremely rarely. Yet, this movie deserves it. In a way, it is a remake of Casualties of war (it is about the rape and brutal assassination of a 15-year-old Iraki girl by two US soldiers) but it is also reminiscent of De Palma's early movies such as "Hi Mom" (this movie is full of screens and windows: the Internet, surveillance cameras, etc...). It shows how the Americans over there act as a colonial power without meaning to (in other terms, if all the American characters are certainly not all monsters and psychos, the system they create over there creates a strong sense of humiliation among Iraki civilians and lead some of them to nihilism). By the same token, it creates an athmosphere where "sketchy individuals can get away with evil". It is surprising to see an American movie so blatantly critical of the US policies in Iraq. A masterpiece.

Pretty good for an Iraq war film. I've gotten tired of the non-fiction docs soldiers have shot, so this was a breath of fresh air.

It's a very good and sad movie about reality and the way it may hit us in our face. Maybe this war is different because the media is there but maybe again, not at all. Who have the right morales and who keeps them?

Brian De Palma returns to the themes of Casualties of War with this stylised retelling of actual events in the present Iraq War. The story of how 3 US servicemen raped and killed a 14 year old girl, and then desecrated her body, after having killed her family, is presented with disturbing graphic detail. De Palma succeeds in highlighting the outrageous injustice of this war, but the real theme of Redacted is that of truth and lies; the disparity between the truth the camera sees, and the lie the camera records.
