If you ask any film historian/student they'll tell you there are 4 important films in the last 3 years of the 60's. The Graduate, Bonnie & Clyde, Night of the Living Dead... and this. I can honestly say after seeing all four that this is my least favorite of the batch. What's ironic is that I also understand why this is probably the most important of the batch. The mostly plotless story shows exactly what the 60's were like to a large group of people. This is what distracts me with the film though is how plotless it really seems to be. I'd put it right up there with reading On the Road where the whole time I think to myself "I can understand why this is important, but there's no story to follow"

It's hilarious. Of course, it has its negative side - some of the jokes weren't as successful as the expected - but in the end it's worth it. The story itself is pretty unique and the perfomances of both main and secondary characters are impecable. Really hilarious. But it seems to me that the essence of the film was lost somewhere for some reason. It starts with a REALLY GREAT and UNIQUE story about lonely guys living in a big city and when you realize, you're just watching another silly and pointless movie about love. Too bad. I guess love sells, right?

Vastly overlooked and under-rated sad, quirky, funny little film.

Never drawing anything more than a faint smile, the film tried too hard for its comedy, badly mixing Martin's zany schtick with the downbeat Neil Simon setting.
