This is quite a fascinating movie. It deals heavily with critique and taste but also touches on lots of other issues such as self discovery, family relations, sexual abuse, etc. The film is just hypnotic and has quite an emotionally resonance to it. I dont even know how to describe this movie really, but it truly is fascinating.

This film fell just short of a 4-star rating for me. It's packed with all the essential ingredients of an enthralling literary piece as well as those of a passionately acted play. There's plenty of pathos, irony, and poetic justice, if you'll forgive the pun. However, there were just too many bizarre and/or boring moments for me. The world Hal Hartley creates for us is not a very believable one, and perhaps this was his intention, but in my opinion, this direction choice was to the film's disadvantage. I am, however, interested in seeing the sequel Fay Grimm, since Henry Fool leaves you with one of the most frustrating cliffhangers ever! By the way, there are at least two jaw-dropping scenes of hilarity that make the film worth viewing.

Hal Hartley's masterpiece is a difficult film to describe, even when you've seen it five times. The performances from the three leads (two of whom are among the most underrated actors working today) are all fantastic, and Hartley's script must be among the smartest ever written. not sure how much I understood this film...but I also know I enjoyed it's oddity and confusion. seeing is the only believing with this one

My favorite thing about this movie is how we as an audience never get to hear Simon's poetry, but merely get to see how it effects the characters, either with delight or disgust. There is too much grotesque comedy for my liking and it seems a little too long, but I found it to be a pretty effective piece of indie cinema. Not something I could watch again any time soon, but I'm glad I got to experience it.
