Lymelife (2008)

A coming of age dramedy where infidelity, real estate, and Lyme disease have two families falling apart on Long Island in the early eighties. There is something very special about this film. There are the mistakes of novice filmmakers, but there is a feeling of certain greatness to come. Martini has a tendency to rely upon music in moments in which I am not sure he was able to capture the full emotion needed with simple camera work. The script could have been revised or perhaps delivered in different ways to add something to the overall performance. There are moment in the film that seem stressed or forced. The story is told in a very second golden age manor. Even with these thing playing against it, it still has something great to it. Within the next 20 years, Derick Martini will make at least one of the finest films we have seen in quiet some time. You can quote me on that. P.S. If any of you do review this film, please don't take compare it to American Beauty. This comparison is foolish and equivalent of an elementary schooler's criticism.

This had the feel of an independent movie from start to finish and as such was quite endearing and engaging. The young lad who plays the lead was excellent and did some brilliant 'stoned' acting. He was helped by a very intelligent and honest script. Nothing much happens throughout but there is a charm and warmth which is lacking in most films these days. Also, one of the best awkward sex scenes ever.

Lacks emotional depth? Somebody needs to stop watching movies while they're doing all sorts of other stuff, because this movie is full of emotional depth. Or maybe somebody is used to watching Hollywood fake emotions that are so far removed from reality that they can't spot realistic emotions. Whatever the case with no-nothing reviewers, this is an excellent movie that presents a unique storyline, characters you can actually care about, and a wonderful look and feel, complete with glorious '70s wardrobe, hair, cars, and style.
