A Prophet (2009)

Sentenced to six years in prison, Malik El Djebena is alone in the world and can neither read nor write. On his arrival at the prison, he seems younger and more brittle than the others detained there. At once he falls under the sway of a group of Corsicans who enforce their rule in the prison. As the 'missions' go by, he toughens himself and wins the confidence of the Corsican group.

Brutal, gripping and sympathetic all at the same time - this movie somehow manages to walk the tightrope between violent action thriller and psychological thriller, with even a fair bit of understated sociological commentary thrown in for good measure. Excellent, and well worth 2 1/2 hours of subtitles.

A Prophet pushes its protagonist into circumstances he did not choose but in which he watches and learns and kills and eventually becomes all he can be, albeit criminally. Certainly Muslims living in France have embraced the movie and Malik, played by Rahim

Whether audiences have the stomach for 150 minutes behind bars remains debatable, but there is no denying the persuasive power of a film that takes no prisoners and pulls no punches.

What a thrill ! When the French start to do things their own way and when they do it good... no one match them. I hope many Americans as possible will able to see this masterpiece. Fucking brilliant.
