Havana (1990)

An American professional gambler named Jack Weil decides to visit Havana, Cuba to gamble. On the boat to Havana, he meets Roberta Duran, the wife of a revolutionary, Arturo. Shortly after their arrival, Arturo is taken away by the secret police, and Roberta is captured and tortured. Jack frees her, but she continues to support the revolution.

Great to see again, now that the bru-ha-ha about Redford's first "mature" film is over. He is sexy and still has it. Lena Olin is divine. The cinematography and portrait of the end of free Havana are special and sustain you through the film even when the plot sags.

Beautifully shot and scored, the impending revolution in Cuba swirls around in the background with romantic old Havana but if you're looking for a historical drama about the period of transition to the 1959 Castro regime, you will be disappointed. This film is a very personal story about the short-lived but intense relationship that unfolds between a professional gambler (Redford)and the beautiful Bobby Duran (Olin), wife of a revolutionary who is thought to have been killed. There is sustained dramatic tension throughout the movie as Jack Weil (Redford) reluctantly finds himself drawn into the politics of the brewing revolution. Nevertheless, the real power of the movie is the chemistry between Olin and Redford and the magnetic on-screen presence of Lena Olin as Bobby. "I was lost in a sweet moment" she tells Jack, and we are lost in Jack's fascination with her. Olin fills up the screen and our senses with her smouldering sensuality and we are lost in her, too. Redford goes to Havana a week before the Castro takeover, meets a pretty lady, finds out she is married...to one of Castro's comrades. Good, but not great plot, one small twist, but lots of great acting and cinematography.

Fell in love with this one the first time I saw it . . . the scenery/setting is very realistic/comparable to Cuba.
