The impressionistic story of a Texas family in the 1950s. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father. Astonishing. A brilliant film that transcends the screen. A hypnotically engaging meditation on morality. Not weighed on the simplistic scales of good or bad, but rather questioning the meaning of either in the context of an eternity that culminates in a world where the greatest joys can be summarized in the simplest of moments often dropped (or altogether missed) by our memories as quickly as that distinct childhood taste of garden hose water on a sweltering summer day. Performances are brilliant (giving a pass to the CGI dinosaurs... perhaps they just needed more rehearsal time than Pitt). Cinematography is jaw dropping (ditto prior note on dinosaurs). And Malick's directing is at its peak (including the reason for including the dinosaurs in the scope of the tale, but ignoring the fact that they looked like they were done to be used in a tv commercial for some technical college).

Mmm how do I put this I left the cinema hearing not just one person saying "that was the worst film I have ever seen" but I came away thinking somehow lighter than when I went in, one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. Not conventional not what a lot of people would even call a film but more of an experience. It's not in many cinemas anymore ( I went last night as it was the last day it was on in mine) so you better be quick if you like slow weird films with not much in the way of story or narrative but instead are just happy to see something creative and beautiful. My film of the year so far!!! îµîµîµîµîµ

Never have i seen a more visual film like The Tree of Life it is a stunning and beautiful film the only film in 2011 that i cried because it is so powerful. Best Film of 2011.
