Goodbye South, Goodbye (1998)

In this portrait of small-time hoods rendered in rhythm-of-life anecdotal detail, Gao is the leader of a circle of layabouts including his sidekick, Flathead, and their girlfriends, Pretzel and Ling. He is also the originator of petty crime schemes, which promise to get the gang nowhere fast.

Not one of Hou's best films, but still a solid outing. This was also more stylistically varied than most of his other films, with many long tracking shots including emphasized POV shots. The story is kind of like a more bleak Millennium Mambo combined with Imamura's Pigs and Battleships (there's even a pig deal scandal subplot) . The Fox Lorber dvd looks like a VHS quality-wise.

what a beautiful film. susan sontag had mentioned this movie in an interview and i checked it out. i have since tried to seen all of Hou's films, and many of them dont come close to this one.

Another slow moving but electrically penetrating film by one of the world's best directors, Hou Hsiao-hsien.

HHH's pre-occupation with Taiwanese youth reached its fullest expression in this masterwork. Brilliantly honest performances, staggering cinematography and endlessly fascinating and ambiguous turning points. A bold and challenging piece of cinematic art.

What's most impressive about Goodbye South Goodbye is the way in which the film seems so completely disenchanted with the antics of its protagonists.
