Edward Yang's redefinitation of confucianism in our time...so sad the director is not with us anymore

To call the late Edward Yang's 'Yi Yi' a family drama would be a woeful understatement and a disservice to this great film. Yang's conservative directorial style helps enhance this naturalistic, voyeuristic glimpse into the interwoven lives of a Taiwanese family. Seamlessly captures the interplay between three generations, and consequently emerges as a brilliant overview of the cycle of birth and death. Sublime and universal in its delivery of common themes of innocence, love, loss and death.

Very entertaining, full of sly humor, both subtle and direct. Situations faced by the characters offer a glimpse into everday life in Taiwan but can be easily related to by Westerners. It is long but once you settle into it, it will sail along nicely. Loaded with beautifully composed shots - look for the cityscapes reflected in glass, some of them are exquisite and amazing!

One of my favorite movies ever!!! The story is very simple but it was directed by a genius! A real masterpiece...

It's nice and long, but a tremendous examination of a the individual tensions in a family.
