Well directed, if slightly overwrought, gangster melodrama from Wellman. As with his other 30s films, the direction is inventive and the visuals are engaging. The ending is a bit silly though.

Midnight Mary is one of the fines films pre-code has to offer. It could have turned out unbearably melodramatic, but it was luckily directed by Wild Bill Wellman. It's one of the tawdriest and sexiest movies of the early 1930s. Loretta Young's performance is really incredible.

Lurid pre code drama, a bit on the absurd side but it does move quickly and Loretta Young is incredibly beautiful, she seems to glow in almost every scene,
