The lost 4-hour long Chinese epic that can only be found on google video, is a summary of everything cinema is all about. A cruel and captivating story about growing up in a hostile environment.

A powerful statement from Yang's generation about what it means to be Taiwanese, superior even to his recent masterpiece Yi Yi.

This extraordinarily tender yet epic and incisive portrait of Taiwan is one of film's great fumblings towards this elusive truth.

Yang's coming-of-age drama that weaves political upheaval, loss of family and national identity, and the turmoil of growing up into a complex four-hour wonder. There are some times when impatience with the pace comes to the fore, but that's pretty rare.

This should be in any list of the best films ever made. Beautiful, poignant, restless - Yang's 4-hour epic is a heartbreaking cross-generational tale of hopelessness and moral downfall. A powerful social commentary of 1960's Taiwan and the ever present impact of cultural norms.
