This film is an absolute masterpiece. Probably the most heartbreaking film I've ever seen. This movie is the antidote to so many (well intentioned though they may be) compromised historical portraits that come out of Hollywood.

Four hours of life, death and everything, in uneasily transitional Taiwan in the early 1960s. Collisions abound between ancient, colonial and modern cultures, Japan and China, West and East, youth and age, in a perfect symphony of Wagnerian scale, lit with the electricity of Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec.
