One of my fav Bette Davis movies in which she plays a 'clip joint hostess' in gambling joints run by the mob. Bette plays Mary Dwight, girl who keeps one step ahead and knows all the angles until she gets into a jam that leads to tragic circumstances. The movie also stars Humphrey Bogart as a crusading D.A. and his real-life wife at the time, Mayo Methot as the over-the-hill hostess, Estelle. The movie is based on the life events of Lucky Luciano who was indicted because of testimonies of prostitutes.

This is a pre-feminist feminist story. While Bogart is the male lead, Bette Davis is the star and hero as an escort for the mob whose sister is killed by them. The secondary leads are the other escorts. This is a story about standing up against fear, the establishment, and it's a story of courage and sisterhood. It's really great to see that progressive thinking isn't a new thing.

Inspired by the life of gangster Lucky Luciano, this film takes hold of you and doesn't let go. Davis not only grabs your attention, she commands it. Davis works as a clip-joint hostess, who along with some of the other hostesses, decides to bravely testify against the big boss Vanning. The ending is unbelievably perfect and powerful.

A promising story has its message and tone muddled by the restrictions of the Production Code. Although very procedural with sometimes atrocious dialogue it has a certain winking, titillating self-knowledge. The acting isn't as good as you'd think it would be, but Bogart is good playing against type and Davis hones a trademark character type for later, better projects.
