Two whimsical, aimless thugs harass and assault women, steal, murder, and alternately charm, fight, or sprint their way out of trouble. They take whatever the bourgeoisie holds dear, whether it's cars, peace of mind, or daughters. Marie-Ange, a jaded, passive hairdresser, joins them as lover, cook, and mother confessor. She's on her own search for seemingly unattainable sexual pleasure.

Not exactly a favorite...but the movie has become part of my visual vocabulary. If you like Wes Anderson movies (I don't) you might like this. It is dark, idiosyncratic humor without the velvet gloves. And prepare yourself for some intense misogyny.

Don't listen to anybody French who tells you it's impossible to appreciate this movie if you're not. Blier's great gift is turning the everyday on its head: you find yourself and laughing uncontrollably at a rape, crying copiously at a wedding and suddenly finding your perceptions of what is and is not acceptable uncomfortably shifting...
