An intense crime thriller, Dark Places is full of intrigue and suspense. The sole survivor of her family's massacre, Libby Day is ask to look at the case one last time in order to exonerate her brother (who was convicted of the crime); but the deeper she looks the more she starts to suspect that her brother is hiding something. Starring Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Christina Hendricks, the film has quite the impressive cast. And, the script does a good job at developing the mystery; telling the present day story in parallel with flashbacks to the events that led up to the murders. Still, the pacing can be rather slow at times, and the plot's a bit complicated. Yet despite its weaknesses, Dark Places is a compelling film.

At this point, I consider myself a big fan of Gillian Flynn. I loved the movie version of "Gone Girl" and I enjoyed reading "Sharp Objects." I decided to go into "Dark Places" without any real knowledge of the story and ultimately, its the weakest story of the three. There is definitely a chance the book tells the story better, but I would not know this as I have not read it. Looking at the movie as a movie, I thought it was okay. The mystery presented is certainly interesting, but it isn't always executed in that way. Segments of the movie feel like a drag and sometimes the story feels like it comes to a halt. I will say I was surprised by the outcome and that's always a good thing in a movie like this. Overall, it's not as impressive as the other stories the author has delivered, but I think it is still worth checking out if you are a fan of hers.

Without the spiky irony of Flynn's first-person writing (the enjoyable Jim Thompson-esque noirisms that pepper the novel, like "I have a meanness in me, real as an organ" occur only rarely) Paquet-Brenner shears the text of any richness, to have it unfold instead in a relentlessly grim manner, less intriguing and evocative than straight-up dour.

I love this movie. It was a get book and a even better movie.
