Downtown '81 (2001)

The film is a day in the life of a young artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat, who needs to raise money to reclaim the apartment from which he has been evicted. He wanders the downtown streets carrying a painting he hopes to sell, encountering friends, whose lives (and performances) we peek into.

It's as a documentary that Downtown 81 is most successful, particularly at those moments when the somewhat unfocused filmmaking allows us to look past the foreground characters and catch glimpses of a vanished cityscape.

the intersection between art and commerce dances street level like a passion play. the painter conflicted by his hungers ruminates to the sounds of this year's hot jazz. sociocultural studies are rarely as compelling and captivating, but basquiat's detournement of life feeds voltages of hope...

I want a time machine, part 1. Everytime i see this movie i want to be in New York City in the late '70s / early '80s. Incredibly evocative.

Amateurish in the extreme, the film is a feast of bohemian cliché, bad writing and worse acting.

liked it better than the schnabel basquiat. raw, clever, and a window into the early 80s new york art scene.
