An engrossing look into early 1980s NYC Lower East Side art/punk rock subculture. I'd watched this a few years ago, and even now, after I've moved out of NYC and become far less entrenched with any sort of counterculture, I found myself quite into it.

As a film this is pretty terrible, but a soundtrack featuring all your No-Wave favourites saves it. And of course it's an interesting look at the New York art world of the 80s from the perspective of it's most famous son. Some good extras on the DVD as well.

i really enjoyed this movie! great band cameos and a fun depiction of the downtown scene.

This movie is like a freeze frame of the New York art scene in the early 80's. If you saw and liked the movie "Basquiat", this is a must see because it stars basquiat and it's interesting to see how realistic certain parts of it are. Basquiat's just an awesome interesting guy in general.

Film is primarily a visual medium. In the case of Downtown 81, Glenn O'Brien and his friends pointed a camera at NYC's best graff artists, avant musicians, fashion designers and rappers. A wholly engaging film that was lost for many years. Best part: DNA.
