Probably one of the least substantial Best Picture Oscar winners ever however it is highly entertaining despite the hokey sentimentality and contrived plot devices. Barry Fitzgerald gives perhaps the finest, funniest and most touching portrayal of old age that has yet reached the screen whilst he and Bing work pure magic together. Bing is a total delight. A good selection of tunes from Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen provides Bing with one of his greatest hits - Swinging On A Star. Good-hearted schmaltz.

Endearing, feel-good film. It's hard not to find the pairing of Fitzgerald and Crosby heart-warming. Good mix of poignancy and light comedy, with a dash of musical. Some fun things I noticed: one kids with a solo was African American and another looked to be a hapa of some sort; I was pleasantly surprised to see William Frawley NOT portraying Fred Mertz; a nice nod to the war efforts are inserted, reminding me that this film was produced in and after the war-time America. Good supporting cast.

While some may find this Best Picture winning classic to be excessively sweet, it's nearly impossible to overtly dislike "Going My Way," an emotionally resonant, compellingly structured picture with a characteristically cool performance from Bing Crosby.

A simple, and almost strange choice for the Academy to pick as their Best Picture. But, at the time we were at war and this is a delightful film with great music and acting. No wonder it go so popular it went on to be the best film of the year. That said, it is delightful and has a lot of heart, but the story kind of strings you along. There does seem to be some structure, but you hardly feel it. Thus, the film feels like it lingers from time to time and the comedy that's inserted most of the time feels forced. It's not bad, it's not great; I end up feeling very middle of the road on this one. While I was delighted by Bing Crosby, I was charmed by Barry Fitzgerald. He made a crotchety old curmudgeon into somebody loveable, but not still without his ruff edges. No wonder he got two nominations for the same role here.
