New York in the 1920s. Max Perkins, a literary editor is the first to sign such subsequent literary greats as Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. When a sprawling, chaotic 1,000-page manuscript by an unknown writer falls into his hands, Perkins is convinced he has discovered a literary genius.

Genius may be a bit stodgy and safe, but it tells a story of beauty — as it plays out in an improbably fruitful friendship, and as it’s discovered within vast expanses of raw language by a craftsman who was arguably an artist in his own right.

"Genius" is about relationship: Thomas Wolfe to Perkins, to Fitzgerald, to Hemingway, to his benefactor lover, to Perkins wife, Louise (a non relationship and even a negative to Louise as he so flippantly encourages Perkins to indulge at the jazz lounge with the paid girls. That doesn't count as cheating. His relationship to his writing: driven by it, to it, all encompassing. So he and his writing are the center, the hub around which the character spokes rotate and tangle. Jude Law is brilliant as Thomas Wolfe. Colin Firth is brilliant as Perkins Guy Pearce as F. Scott Fitzgerald...emotionally charged storytelling about storytelling, life and death.

The critics did not like this biopic, but I really did. Two Academy Award winners and Jude Law in a role so different from his usual characters that it was 15 minutes into the film before I recognized him. I loved the script and direction, the production values and art direction were wonderful and it made me interested in authors I usually avoid, since the 19th century is my favorite literary period. But this movie impressed me as being top notch.

Genius does a pretty good job of capturing the peculiar drama of the relationship between editors and writers, in this case some of the most revered in American letters.
