This is a great little animated film that regular blockbusters could learn from. The team is established through three short flashbacks as a nastier uncompromising version of DC's holier than thou trinity. What maybe appeared initially as a "these are worse heroes" fable evolved into a nice murder mystery (with nods to Watchmen) where it turns out the heroes are actually heroes still. There are some great action scenes and a fairly mature approach considering the language and violence. This is all achieved in just over an hour while a live-action film would probably need two 2.5 hour films to cover the same ground.

Gods And Monsters reaffirms the DC animation superiority with an entertaining, fun and smart movie for all of us fans that just want to see something new. A what if story that feels refreshing in a desert of reboots, this is not a retelling, this is fun for the mature fans.

Never got a good grasp for the characters, doesn't help that flashbacks for some of the characters doesn't happen until over halfway into the movie, when I just mostly had a lot of unanswered questions as to who these characters were supposed to be. Even when finding out more about them, I never found any of them very interesting. I think this story was a too little out there, if they wanted to do something with alternate worlds/universes, perhaps they should have tried something from "Justice League Unlimited" where the Justice League had contact with more fascistic versions of themselves from a different world or whatever. The original storyline here just wasn't very interesting for me.

DC explores an alternative universe in Justice League: Gods and Monsters. In this re-envisioning Superman is fathered by General Zod and leads an ultra-violent super-powered trio that work with the government to takeout terrorist groups; but after they're framed for a number of murders the government turns against them. Featuring the voice talents of Benjamin Bratt, Michael C. Hall, and Tamara Taylor, the casting is pretty good. Additionally, the artwork features some interesting character designs that reflect the darker tone. And, the violence is surprisingly graphic and doesn't shy away from showing blood and carnage. Incredibly bold, Justice League: Gods and Monsters is a thrilling Elseworld adventure.
