Mikhanovsky and Austen train an affectionate gaze on their characters, both as individuals and as part of distinct groups that intersect and overlap with uplifting results.

Give Me Liberty is remarkable not just for its authenticity but for the way it serves up that authenticity sans self-congratulation. There are no showboating gestures here, only a bone-deep commitment to showing us the lives of individuals often relegated to the cinematic sidelines, to the extent that the movies even notice them all.

The best thing that can be said about the script, penned by acclaimed playwright Alice Austen, is that it never sounds written. Most of the dialogue seems as if it were improvised by the film’s remarkable ensemble, particularly when scenes of prolonged verbal altercations reach Cassavetes-level decibels.

Despite a handful of moments of inspired comedic brilliance, this shoestring-budget independent comedy-drama never quite nails it the way it could have. When the film sticks to its humorous roots, it works relatively well, but, when it attempts to wax philosophically, it becomes self-important and loses focus. That's unfortunate. because the underlying premise that launches the story should have been sufficient enough to carry the film. However, as it progresses and starts to chart other more serious territory, it becomes scattered, preachy and, at times, hard to follow. Director Kirill Mikhanovsky shows a lot of promise through this production, but he clearly needs to refine his work in future offerings.

It was likely from Mikhanovsky’s own experience driving a medical transport van that he was able to tap into the complexity and full humanity of the different characters and thus, manifest a greater truth.
