The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu (1980)

Fu Manchu's 168th birthday celebration is dampened when a hapless flunky spills Fu's age-regressing elixir vitae. Fu sends his lackeys to round up ingredients for a new batch of elixir, starting with the Star of Leningrad diamond, nabbed from a Soviet exhibition in Washington. The FBI sends agents Capone and Williams to England to confer with Nayland Smith, an expert on Fu.

Unfortunate that this was Sellers last film, but it's got it's moments. Strangely, the second time Sellers played a stereotypical Chinese character in the last few years of his life (the other being in Murder By Death, as Charlie Chan)...

Ive seen 5 Fu Manchu movies & some are good/some not so much but I can't deny that Fu Manchu is a great character. He's main reason why I tune in. A really funny spoof of this series could be made..this isn't it even w/ Peter Sellers pulling double duty as Chu & Nayland Smith. It's actually a tragedy that this was Sellers last role that he end being caught up in such a lame duck production. I didn't think it was going to be as bad as it turned out because I got a couple of giggles in the opening scene before the credits rolled but it falls flat on its face right after that. It's too bad because Sellers tries hard playing to his greatest strength as a master of disguise. It just seemed that the makers of this film thought that would be enough. For his die hard fans it may have been but I found it to be more embarrassing then anything else

Exactly what I hoped it would be. Is it bad that I hoped for mediocrity?

Peter Sellers is great. The movie is pretty bad.

Not the ideal way for Peter Sellers to go out. The film awkwardly juggles a few different brands of humor (none of them particularly funny), and Sellers, though clearly game, is saddled with dual roles that are not all that interesting. It's certainly no atrocity, but it's thoroughly unremarkable.
