Golden Door (2006)

The story is set at the beginning of the 20th century in Sicily. Salvatore, a very poor farmer, and a widower, decides to emigrate to the US with all his family, including his old mother. Before they embark, they meet Lucy. She is supposed to be a British lady and wants to come back to the States. Lucy, or Luce as Salvatore calls her, for unknown reasons wants to marry someone before to arrive to Ellis Island in New York. Salvatore accepts the proposal. Once they arrive in Ellis Island they spend the quarantine period trying to pass the examinations to be admitted to the States. Tests are not so simple for poor farmers coming from Sicily. Their destiny is in the hands of the custom officers.

this was pretty stunning. the story won't teach you much new about the human condition (like Die Hard 4 and stuff) but the cinematography is really something else.

Easily one of the best movies of 2007. GOLDEN DOOR is like a feature-length version of the first scene in THERE WILL BE BLOOD in that there's very little dialogue, it's shot and edited exquisitely, and it deals with man (people, in this case) trying to better his life. The scope of the film is epic -- Italian immigrants voyaging to the United States -- and yet completely intimate as we follow one particular family and a woman who crosses their path on the long journey. There are startling images in this movie, a very specific and often times unexpected sense of humor, and a resonance that calls to mind our current immigration issues. For you film geeks out there, I can't recommend this movie highly enough.
