Zabriskie Point (1970)

Anthropology student Daria, who's helping a property developer build a village in the Los Angeles desert, and dropout Mark, who's wanted by the authorities for allegedly killing a policeman during a student riot, accidentally encounter each other in Death Valley and soon begin an unrestrained romance.

Antonioni may not be for everyone's tastes but every film he made was a masterpiece for me.

Really well filmed flick, very weird but really good acting.

While I didn't like the politics of this movie, Antonioni is still Antonioni.

Antonioni tackles the north American 1960's counter culture with typically stylish and arresting results. Plot is not half as important as discourse and the films is famous for its lengthy shots as well as revolutionary student discussions. Idealistic? Of course, but there's nothing wrong with that when faced with cultural hegemony of the military industrial complex white male capitalism. The finale is often spoke of for its hypnotic photography and use of Pink Floyd but Daria is killing her parents when she blows up the house. If that's not an indictment of the bourgeois family set up then I don't know what is. As much a celebration of youth as it is a dissection of its naivety and the failings of the authoritarian left.
