The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)

Questions arise when Senator Stoddard attends the funeral of a local man named Tom Doniphon in a small Western town. Flashing back, we learn Doniphon saved Stoddard, then a lawyer, when he was roughed up by a crew of outlaws terrorizing the town, led by Liberty Valance. As the territory's safety hung in the balance, Doniphon and Stoddard, two of the only people standing up to him, proved to be very important, but different, foes to Valance.

Classic John Ford western that wasn't appreciatd by critics of its time. This is a beautiful film about the nature of heroism and the creation of myths. It asks when is a lie better to hold onto than the truth. Some have argued that Stewart and Wayne were too old to be playing their roles but this actually gives the film a more melancholy tone. Pensive and slow moving but also cerebral at the same time. A great way to introduce yourself to John Wayne if you have never seen one of his films.

Justice, democracy, violence and press are the mainstay themes of this marvellous film. This intelligent and mature yet fun western is masterfully directed by Ford and performed by every member of the cast.
