The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)

Questions arise when Senator Stoddard attends the funeral of a local man named Tom Doniphon in a small Western town. Flashing back, we learn Doniphon saved Stoddard, then a lawyer, when he was roughed up by a crew of outlaws terrorizing the town, led by Liberty Valance. As the territory's safety hung in the balance, Doniphon and Stoddard, two of the only people standing up to him, proved to be very important, but different, foes to Valance.

John Ford, in one of his most memorable Westerns, contrasts a young,idealistic lawyer played by Jimmy Stewart with a hardened, realistic, cowboy played by John Wayne. The former believes in laws, the latter in guns. Rivals for the affections of the same girl played by Vera Miles, the two face a common foe in Liberty Valance, the whip-wielding bandit played by Lee Marvin.

With all the Ford requirements and the Ford mystique, including John Wayne and James Stewart off- setting each other's archetypal physiques, presences, worlds and implications; and Edmond O'Brien, at his uproariest.

This is a great movie. it has the plot and setup necessary for the makings of a classic western, plus the cast to back it up. Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne play off of each other perfectly in a hero/ anti-hero setup. Also, look out for Lee Van Cleef, better known as Angel Eyes from "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" playing the role of Reese, one of Liberty's henchmen.

My favorite John Wayne movie. Dark, violent, brutal. Lee Marvin in his best role as the greatest villain of all-time.
