Fascinating documentary following the Stones on their 1969 tour of the US, though much of the focus is on the concert at the Altamont Speedway. At times this plays more like a horror film, with a pervasive sense of dread present throughout. As scuffles continue through the day, and the lead singer of Jefferson Airplane is attacked by Hells' Angels, there is a definite feeling that something bad will happen. The idea that this concert somehow marked the end of the '60s spirit perhaps is largely music journos' hyperbole, but this is still a compelling document of a poorly organised fiasco with tragic consequences.

History in the making unfolded before our eyes. The death of a generation.

Horrifying. Riveting. Mesmerizing. One of the most compelling and brilliantly made documentaries about anything ever. Just as extreme conservatism negates agency, so the total, initially idealistic liberalism depicted in Gimme Shelter lead to uncontrollable lawlessness, with an ironically identical conclusion. Peace and love give way to hate and death. Freedom is forfeited to chaos, and the concert itself is a cinematic equivalent of Bosch's vision of hell. Jagger's boyish naivete turns over the course of ninety minutes into the bitter sorrow of a man, and suddenly I know why the Stones' post-60s work has always felt a lot safer and more restrained to me--it was. An exceptional and important film.

The Maysles won the documentary lottery ticket with this feature, at the expense of some hippie lives. By sending out many bolex cameras into the audience, the maysles brothers record what will later be considered the death of the free love movement. The death of hippydom is contained within this stark film, and it is something that should be experienced by everyone. More than a right place, right time documentary, this film reaks of a postmodern sophistication that is the polar opposite of the maysles brothers previous work (like Salesman). That being said, you get to witness an evolution both of the popular culture of the late 60's early seventies, but the departure of american documentary cinema from its previous direct cinema stance, to more of a progressive verite.
