Gimme Danger (2016)

No other band in rock'n'roll history has rivaled The Stooges' combination of heavy primal throb, spiked psychedelia, blues-a-billy grind, complete with succinct angst-ridden lyrics, and a snarling, preening leopard of a frontman who somehow embodies Nijinsky, Bruce Lee, Harpo Marx, and Arthur Rimbaud all rolled into one. There is no precedent for The Stooges, while those inspired by them are now legion. The film will present the context of their emergence musically, culturally, politically, historically, and relate their adventures and misadventures while charting their inspirations and the reasons behind their initial commercial challenges, as well as their long-lasting legacy.

What it lacks in depth, this documentary compensates by capturing the eclectic spirit of its subject.

Went into this movie with kind of indifference to the stooges. By the end I was convinced that they were an influential band.

J. R. Jones 03 Nov 2016

Iggy Pop, the band's front man and the only member to graduate to a solo career, is a source of endless hilarity as he recalls the band's grungy beginnings and lurching journey through the music business.

T'Cha Dunlevy 10 Nov 2016

Along their messy path, they made some crazy music. Archival footage and photos as well as stop-motion animation round out the picture of a band that defied the cookie-cutter model of the music industry and refused to play the game.

Alberto Bermejo 05 Dec 2016

A documentary of a singer who has reinvented rock, and that it will please the unconditional fans. [Full review in Spanish]
