An edgy, intriguing tapestry of character drama framed by brilliant performances and intellectual screenwriting. This is a unique and compelling story, and the performances by the two marvelous leads heighten it to its full potential. One of the smartest and most well-crafted movies of the year.

A taught story of how two deeply flawed women forge a destructive relationship based on ones sheer stupidity and the others manipulative nature. Judi Dench plays possibly the most monterous character in film since Hannibal Lector and plays the role perfectly. The sort of mad, cat obsessed harridan that you really don't want living next door. Cate Blanchett is equally well cast as the naive, self-pitying young teacher who brings her own world crashing down by instigating the scandal of the title. The movie deals with complex issues in a sparse, economical manner, allowing the story to unfold before the viewer with the inevitability of a slow motion car crash. Gripping viewing.

Now I love a good drama & with a cast like Blanchett, Dench & Nighy it would be very hard to fuck it up, so I'm glad to say it was brilliant. The editing was spot on & the Dench did good. She was utterly scary and Cate played off of her brilliantly. I think this is Judi's best movie to date & she should have got the Oscar for such a complex character.
