Gimme Shelter (1970)

A detailed chronicle of the famous 1969 tour of the United States by the British rock band The Rolling Stones, which culminated with the disastrous and tragic concert held on December 6 at the Altamont Speedway Free Festival, an event of historical significance, as it marked the end of an era: the generation of peace and love suddenly became the generation of disillusionment.

What happens when a bunch of effete art-school grads from Jolly Old meet some REALLY BAD PEOPLE...Mick prances around with his "Their Satanic Majesties" schtick, while in real life stoned hippies are getting stomped and worse by Hell's Angels. Amazingly well photographed and edited -- the Maysles's and editor Charlotte Zwerin are the ultimate documentary team. The Criterion Collection DVD is awesome, too -- outstanding restoration job of the film and soundtrack, and great extra features.

Would definitely recommend looking up what happened at the Altamont Speedway concert before watching this.

A solid documentary! A band like the Stones couldn't help but be interesting, especially during such a tumultuous time period. Even if you aren't a fan of the band, the picture stands as a strong piece of work.

The shot of a Hell's Angels' guy stabbing a fan is still very horrific. Film moves well and has pretty good musical performances, even though the crowd was out of control.

A brutally shocking piece of rockumentary, for its story and direction, but all the more so for its truth. The darker side of what is often thought of as a period of joy, free thought and happiness. Astonishing.
