Every moment of genuine fear is eventually undone by excess, working to pad acting demo reels, not fulfill storytelling requirements.

I think this was easily one of the best films from last year. Not an easy story to watch. Scene stealing Mackie gives a wonderful performance as a homeless immigrant helping Connelly come to terms with her own problems. While each are tormented by their life decisions, sticking together is the only way to find a home. See this.

While there are flashes of impressive direction - especially in his use of location - Bettany's woefully underwritten script almost immediately dogs Shelter down.

Its intentions are noble. Its gaze is harshly realistic. But it’s also overly melodramatic. Bettany has the makings of better director than screenwriter.
