Beautifully composed, it is a film that reaches well beyond the surface of its story. It is about the very condition and mood of our times, and the palpable sense of some oncoming cataclysm.

I was reluctant to see this movie, but it was an amazing experience. I squirmed around a lot, especially during the final act. The movie had a lot of meaning for me, as it touched on many universal themes.

This movie is flying under the radar right now but I decided to take a chance on it this weekend and let me tell you this is a very dark and depressing movie. Now I know which you must be thinking reading this, why would you give something dark and depressing 5 stars? It is more about how the cast and crew portrayed their message on the screen. The whole time I was watching this I was feeling Ethan Hawke's character's depression and watching it get worse and worse. It is very well directed and written by Paul Schrader and had lots of Taxi Driver feels (as he is the writer of both). If you love Taxi Driver I believe this is in the same realm but it takes a step further and is much darker. I found this to be a great film no matter how depressing it was.

Ethan Hawke brilliantly captures the doubt many believers wrestle with, but the film never seriously engages with the counsel the Bible offers to deal with it.
