Eyes Without a Face (1960)

Dr. Génessier is riddled with guilt after an accident that he caused disfigures the face of his daughter, the once beautiful Christiane, who outsiders believe is dead. Dr. Génessier, along with accomplice and laboratory assistant Louise, kidnaps young women and brings them to the Génessier mansion. After rendering his victims unconscious, Dr. Génessier removes their faces and attempts to graft them on to Christiane's.

Terrifying for its time and disturbingly demented by today's standards

A terrifying film, perhaps one of the most frightening I've ever seen. With a rare starkness, this film portrays the blunt utilitarianism of the human being. We use our fellow humans; it's that simple. Silence of the Lambs is informed by the cold wierdness of this scenario. Because the plot is not that far fetched, the terror is that much more palpable. The documentary on slaughterhouses included in the special features will provide no relief.

With his daughter forced to wear a blank porcelain mask to hide the scars from an automobile accident, a brilliant plastic surgeon will go to any lengths to find a cure for her disfigurement. The pace is a bit too measured at times (they could have squeezed in one more victim), but the images are beautiful and haunting.
