Cabiria (1914)

Young Cabiria is kidnapped by pirates and sold as a slave in Carthage. Just as she's to be sacrificed to Moloch, Cabiria is rescued by Fulvius Axilla, a good-hearted Roman spy, and his powerful slave, Maciste. The trio are broken up as Cabiria is entrusted to a woman of noble birth. With Cabiria's fate unknown, Maciste punished for his heroism, and Fulvius sent away to fight for Rome, is there any hope of our heroes reuniting?

Astonishing silent epic about the Punic Wars, much of which anticipates the Babylon sequences in Griffith's "Intolerance". The scale is enormous, but it manages not to alienate because it sticks to a fairly straightforward linear narrative that deals with characters and events on their own terms rather than trying to make them overtly conceptual and symbolic (the key word being "overtly"; this is also a film about the barbarousness of North African culture contrasted with the enlightened Roman world - but the film is almost a century old, and roughly the same thing is true of "300", vintage 2007, so I'm willing to cut it some slack). The set pieces - Hannibal crossing the Alps, the sacrifices to Moloch, the battle sequences - still hold up today, as the more static camera work lets the audience take in the scope and choreography.

This movie appears to be 10 or 15 years ahead of its time with such advancements as intercut dialogue boxes (though they often contain entire paragraphs with a lot of the story), complex and sprawling sets, and excellent costuming. There are still a few things that can date it. For example, almost the entire film is done with a stationary camera, and there are no matching action shots that Griffith introduced in his chase scenes for Birth of a Nation. In the second half of the film though, there are two moving camera shots. Basically, it is a huge period drama with excellent sets and costumes, and a story that is good enough to keep your interest. Cabiria is also a good film to view for those with an interest in the history of cinema as the viewer can precisely deliniate cinematic advancements and compare it to other early silent features. It is as enjoyable as a movie from the late 1920s and I recommend it for those who can enjoy silents.

"Cabiria," made in Italy in 1914 by Giovanni Pastrone, had a huge impact on cinema, encouraging countless directors worldwide (among them America's D.W. Griffith) to take their craft more seriously and create longer, more artistically ambitious films. Unfortunately, I found the film a bore. I couldn't watch it for more than an hour. Set during ancient Roman times, it tells the story of a young girl named Cabiria born at the foot of Mount Etna in Sicily. After a volcano wipes out her home, she is sold to a Carthaginian priest seeking children to sacrifice in his religious rituals. The only gripping scenes were those in the Temple of Moloch, where naked children are sacrificed one by one as frenzied dancers cheer the priest on. Cabiria is rescued and ends up on the run under the protection of a fellow Roman and his slave. That's when the boredom really sets in.

There is a 3 hour version, a 2 hour and 20 minute version, and a 2 hour version. I watched the 2 hour version that's on Netflix Instant Viewing. The first half of the film was great and has an exciting dark plot. The second half introduces a lot of new characters and the scenes seem too scattered. I'm sure the longer versions of the film have a lot more detail to the plot to help fulfill the story. I was not expecting to be as entertained as I was with this film, especially for being 100 years old. From a few reviews I've read about this film, it seems to have been a nice foundation film especially for the epic genre. I recommend this film to those who love film history and if you enjoyed classics like Ben-Hur or Spartacus. I recommend reading the review by Roger Ebert on this film. Story: 4, Cinematography: 4, Acting: 4, Score: 4. Total Score: 4/5

Though there are some mighty awesome prop scenery, this is pretty dry and long winded in the cue card department.
