Cabiria (1914)

Young Cabiria is kidnapped by pirates and sold as a slave in Carthage. Just as she's to be sacrificed to Moloch, Cabiria is rescued by Fulvius Axilla, a good-hearted Roman spy, and his powerful slave, Maciste. The trio are broken up as Cabiria is entrusted to a woman of noble birth. With Cabiria's fate unknown, Maciste punished for his heroism, and Fulvius sent away to fight for Rome, is there any hope of our heroes reuniting?

A Must to see for film scholars. It's the second time I watch this epic film which inspired Griffith, and in which Pastrone experiments the his invention of the dolly (yes, he invented the dolly!!!!), and I always appreciate the sophisticated use of the cinematic devices of early Italian cinema. Fab is also the mimesis of the music score with the compositional elements of the image and the narrative. And then the Temple of Moloch is so 'unheimlich'...

Le travail de Pastrone est magnifique. C'est un des rares rÃ©alisateurs qui a travaillÃ© comme un peintre sur sa toile avec une force crÃ©ative peu Ã©galÃ©e. Il y a des rÃ©alisateurs qui font des films et d'autres, plus rares, qui construisent une oeuvre... Pastrone en fait parti pour toujours !

There is a 3 hour version, a 2 hour and 20 minute version, and a 2 hour version. I watched the 2 hour version that's on Netflix Instant Viewing. The first half of the film was great and has an exciting dark plot. The second half introduces a lot of new characters and the scenes seem too scattered. I'm sure the longer versions of the film have a lot more detail to the plot to help fulfill the story. I was not expecting to be as entertained as I was with this film, especially for being 100 years old. From a few reviews I've read about this film, it seems to have been a nice foundation film especially for the epic genre. I recommend this film to those who love film history and if you enjoyed classics like Ben-Hur or Spartacus. I recommend reading the review by Roger Ebert on this film. Story: 4, Cinematography: 4, Acting: 4, Score: 4. Total Score: 4/5

Astonishing silent epic about the Punic Wars, much of which anticipates the Babylon sequences in Griffith's "Intolerance". The scale is enormous, but it manages not to alienate because it sticks to a fairly straightforward linear narrative that deals with characters and events on their own terms rather than trying to make them overtly conceptual and symbolic (the key word being "overtly"; this is also a film about the barbarousness of North African culture contrasted with the enlightened Roman world - but the film is almost a century old, and roughly the same thing is true of "300", vintage 2007, so I'm willing to cut it some slack). The set pieces - Hannibal crossing the Alps, the sacrifices to Moloch, the battle sequences - still hold up today, as the more static camera work lets the audience take in the scope and choreography.

Definitely not 3 hours long. The first half was pretty good, but the second half dragged a lot, although the battle scenes were awesome.
