Blood from the Mummy's Tomb (1971)

Two Egyptologists, Professor Fuchs and Corbeck, are instrumental in unleashing unmitigated horror by bringing back to England the mummified body of Tara, the Egyptian Queen of Darkness. Fuchs's daughter becomes involved in a series of macabre and terrifying incidents, powerless against the forces of darkness, directed by Corbeck, that are taking possession of her body and soul to fulfill the ancient prophesy that Queen Tara will be resurrected to continue her reign of unspeakable evil.

Effective budget shocker with an interesting cast that make the most of this middle-of-the-road production. Taking its inspiration from Bram Stoker's other famous story (Jewel of the Seven Stars) the movie's story doesn't fill in all the blanks, mainly the relationship and back story to the archeological team. The cast is filled with quirky looking character actors, prime among them is Hugh Burden and Aubrey Morris (who also featured in 1997's Bram Stoker's Legend of the Mummy, based on the same story) wearing the most bizarre glasses this side of 1970's Elton John. Valerie Leon fills her role adequately. The direction tries to compensate for the lack of special FX with unique angles and camera tricks; it doesn't always impress but it gets the job done. The finale is a bit of a letdown although the final frame leaves the audience with a very good ambiguous ending. Kudos to a Leon's boyfriend being named Tod Browning (the director of 1931's Dracula).

Hammer's final foray into Egyptology and a brave stab at doing something else with the genre without an actual bandaged mummy. It's effectively an adaption of Bram Stoker's story 'The Jewel of Seven Stars' and though confusing at the start, this is probably because of director Seth Holt's death one week before completion, and the movie had to be taken over by Michael Carreras. It does pull together in the end however to make it a chilling and quite gory later Hammer treat. As usual, a great cast of British character actors work well together including James Villiers, Hugh Burden, Rosalie Cruthchley and George Couloris and Andrew Keir fills in for Peter Cushing who left the production due to the death of his wife.

Noteworthy entry in Hammer's Mummy franchise and a better-than-average example of late-period Hammer films. The evil queen has a buxom avatar who is at once investigating the strange fashion among daddy's fellow archeologists for having ripped-out throats, even as she seems to be behind it all on some level. The film seems to jump freely between swinging London fashions and something a generation older without rhyme or reason, and very little money was spent on effects. But you can also play "hey isn't that...?" with most of the large cast.

A Mummy film without any actual Mummy's in it! That's an odd idea to start with but the production is so bereft of ideas that it's difficult to say anything other than give this one a miss.

Valerie Leon is great, Hammer shouldÂ´ve used her more. Michael Carreras never seemed to quite nail it the way that Terence Fisher did.
