The Mummy's Hand (1940)

A couple of young, out-of-work archaeologists in Egypt discover evidence of the burial place of the ancient Egyptian princess Ananka. After receiving funding from an eccentric magician and his beautiful daughter, they set out into the desert only to be terrorized by a sinister high priest and the living mummy Kharis who are the guardians of Ananka's tomb.

It plays like a serial chapter adventure shown during matinees in the 1940s.

A great movie and great sequel which is hard to find in todays movies

A pair of Americans (Dick Foran & Wallace Ford) convince an aging stage magician (Cecil Kellaway) to finance their excavation of a forbidden Egyptian tomb. Unfortunately for them, this tomb is guarded by an ancient cult that uses strange leaves to control a cursed, shambling mummy (Tom Tyler). The Mummy's Hand is occasionally cited as a sequel to 1932's The Mummy, but it's actually a loose remake that supplants the moody dread of the original with goofy banter and cheap thrills. This movie is far too formulaic and cheaply-made to be a highlight of Universal's monster series, but it's made with competence and it brings most of what one would desire from a modest B-Movie.

Less of a sequel, and more of a slightly superior remake of the original. The only thing that could've made this one even better would have been had it features Karloff as the title monster, but Tom Tyler is pretty good too. Still...it has stronger characters and plot, as a well as a much needed swifter pace, than the original. This time the Mummy is not Imhotep, but Kharis. Kharis has pretty much the same backstory as Imhotep, having his tongue cut out and being buried alive, ready to return from the dead to terrorize some folks. The non-monster characters a little better here, featuring a couple of guys who want to go on an expedition, and get this funny old magician guy to fund it, prompting him and his daughter to come along for the ride. They are solid characters, and they make this picture work. It is odd to say so, but I personally preferred this sequel to the original, which I found pretty boring (much like Dracula before it). I'd recommend this one for a good classic Horror watch during the Halloween season.

Chaney, like Karloff, hated the Mummy makeup (Chaney was no fan of the Wolfman transformation, either). Karloff said his Mummy make up took longer than Frankenstein. My question is why not put Chaney's name over the title for marque value (which was done) but let a Chaney double or Tom Tyler, the original Mummy in "The Mummy's Hand" play the monster. With all that make up and rags, it's difficult to recognize Chaney anyway. Besides, half the time the Mummy stumbles around in virtual darkness. How long is Chaney actually in the three films he did as the Mummy? Maybe 20 minutes each, if that? Pay Chaney, let's say, $2,000 for his name on the marquee in each picture, but let Tyler do the heavy lifting. To satisfy Tyler (who'll probably get the scale salary), list him in the beginning and end credits, but give him a character name NOT in the movie.
