DVD First Viewing, 1 Yang film seen Blind Shaft is a thriller that works better as a documentary. Director Li Yang started as a documentarian, and his style shows it in an attempt to make a noir, bleak movie about two con-men miners from China. It offers some commentary on the evils of men and the overpopulation of China, but I thought it was a little unsatisfying. And the ending is a little too ironic. Even cliche.

Following the story is like walking down a mine shaft. Even with a weak headlamp, you kind of know where it's going, and it can't be good. But follow it you do, thanks to Yang's relentless, verite-style filmmaking.

The last great Chinese movie I saw. Very funny and realistic depiction of modern China, with that hilarious line, "Okay, we'll first get him laid, then we'll kill him."

A politically rife film that delves deep into the themes of coming of age, sexuality, morality, and life and death. Shot in a Neo-realism vain and acted well.
