Very disappointed in Shaft number 5. Based on the previous editions, I expected an entertaining good guys vs bad guys experience. Unfortunately this was so over the top crude and rude that I walked out after the first few minutes. Should have asked for my money back.

Despite a few laughs, it’s a film that panders to a general audience with the funky musical score of a blaxploitation flick but none of the heart, spirit, or outrage.

Despite its sometimes questionable jokes, provocative cultural trolling and a shaky plot, Shaft isn’t either a full-on misfire nor blaxploitation rejuvenation. Instead, Shaft is a decent, if slightly tepid, action comedy anchored by a hilarious performance by Samuel L. Jackson.

Even though it was full of the usual buddy cop action movie tropes the screenplay felt strong. Importantly it has fun with its ideas and rides along the border to full blown genre parody staying just cool enough to 'be' a shaft movie and not National Lampoons Loaded Weapon! The lack of drama is oddly both refreshing and disappointing as characters so the never resolve their issues beyond anything superficial and are therefore quite 2 dimensional (its a Shaft movie!). So if you're in the mood for an action 'almost parody' movie then check this out.

Shaft attempts to hide its own prejudices by simply acknowledging those issues, without so much as a trace of depth or substance.
