Must all gay romances end in tragedy? The writers and directors here try to force the emotions of the audience. In the beginning, Chen is pretty loathesome, but we fall in love with the innocent, naive Lan Yu. By the middle of the film, we're goaded to care for Chen, but given no real reason other than his own poor choices and his obsession with Lan Yu. I guess I just didn't get it. Don't young gay men ever find nice guys? Give me Formula 17 instead.

There's too much to say about this film. It' s just VERY VERY GOOD. I wrote about this film like 4 times in my diary. haha. Stanley does capture the book very well and LIU YE just rocks the character. His sadness within the eye is very hard to forget. Not only that i love Stanley's editing style of mixing the timeline. Its' scene contains very little music which kinda emphasize their sound, their breathing. The part he dies. man I cry like ... A little kid. Hu Jun ( who plays Hang Dong) cries just echos in the room. It's heart ripping.

A sensitive portrayal of relationship between two men. A bit slow at some places and a huge gap in some areas. If there is a balance in these areas, it could be the best film I ever seen from Taiwan.
