The King of Masks (1995)

Wang Bianlian is an aging street performer known as the King of Mask for his mastery of Sichuan Change Art in a true story. His wife left him with and infant son over 30 years ago. The son died from illness at age 10. This left Wang a melancholy loner aching for a male descendent to learn his rare and dying art.

This movie contains a man dressed as a goddess, a girl who pretends to be a boy, an old mask man missing a tooth, and a really cute monkey.

I'm all for foreign films but this one did nothing for me. Maybe I just didn't catch some important pieces of cultural heritage or something but the film making was good but nothing special, the script was so-so.

this is a very cute, sweet, culturally interesting movie. reminded me a lot of "swiss family robinson" as far as cinematography goes -- i was stunned to learn its from 1999 and not the 1960s.

This movie starts off a little slow, but that is ok. The rest really makes up for it. The cast was ok. The main old man and the little girl were great though. This movie has a touching message and on top of that a lot of lessons. It shows that women can be just as good as men in that time period. The little girl proves it. That was because it was during a time when women meant nothing in this country. Another side hero was the man that dresses like a woman. All the women want his children and all the men wish they were him. So the men fight against woman rights, yet they want to be like a man dressed as one. Interesting huh? But the old man and the girl is what really has a heart to heart story. Great film.
